Johanna Dobrich, M.A., LCSW-R
Johanna Dobrich, M.A., LCSW-R is a psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City.
I have always been observant and sensitive to the varied ways in which life experience informs human identity. The capacity to establish enriching relational connections and to lead an authentic life is not necessarily something that just happens. At some time or another most of us usually need some help along the way to evolve into the version of ourselves we most long to be/come.
I became a psychoanalytic psychotherapist as a second career, after working in politics and studying congressional representation. I earned my Master’s degree in Political Science from Rutgers University, and my MSW in clinical social work from New York University.
I completed a four-year psychoanalytic training certificate program at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy. In addition to working psychoanalytically, I also provide EMDR (Eye Movement Sensitization and Reprocessing) therapy an approach that unfreezes trauma from within the nervous system reorganizing these perceptual, affective, and cognitive experiences into more adaptive places.
Currently I serve on the faculty at the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center (PPSC), the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP) and the National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP) in NYC. I provide clinical supervision to psychoanalytic candidates and therapists looking to deepen their skills. I am most interested in helping clinicians make use of their own vulnerability in ways that create a facilitative healing environment for patients and therapists alike.
I have a broad range of professional interests including: the study and treatment of trauma and dissociative disorders, complicated grief/mourning, chronic illness in the family, attachment problems, anxiety and depressive disorders. I find it a privilege to provide emotional care to those seeking transformation and consider myself a life-long learner, always integrating new clinical ideas and approaches within my practice.
